What is Galaxy ?
Simply, Galaxy
is a new programming technology that combines the best ideas of
two software worlds: Internet and Desktop.
Business Applications written in Galaxy (Galaxy Applications)
are both Internet and Desktop
applications at the same time and therefore inherit the best features
from both approaches.
Galaxy Applications:
- Run over the Internet / Intranet
in a Multiple User environment with an Unlimited
number of concurrent users.
- Provide Incredibly Fast and Interactive
User Interfaces. Because Galaxy is truly
an Internet system, the Desktop-Like
approach becomes a major desired feature. Most known applications
running over the Internet have unfriendly user interfaces, work
slow or do not have user interactivity that user experienced with
old-fashioned Desktop applications. End users are not concerned
with technology being used. They expect robust, fast, smart and
INTERACTIVE software, especially when they work
with vertical (industry specific) business applications. That
exactly what Galaxy is.
- Support single Facility, large
Enterprise or multiple Enterprises
across the Internet.
- Require Minimal to No
client maintenance (“Smart Client”
approach). The concept of “Smart Client”
means that no database drivers or business specific programs are
installed on the client computers. Client computers are Self-Updateable
with any new business logic from the Internet / Intranet automatically.
The ability to plug a new client computer / user without initial
configuration and further manual updates is a very important management
feature, especially for the large enterprises with a large number
of users.
- Provide powerful and hierarchical User
Security. Different users (or group of users) might have
different levels of accessibility to every element of Galaxy
Application.
- Implement high-secure Encryption
of the data being sent over the Internet.
- Maintain Distributed Computing
on all Galaxy layers (ability to share huge processing
loads between multiple machines).
- Offer users group communication (Mail,
Chat) within Enterprise scope.
Hardware and Software requirements
- You don't need a brand new computer. Every computer
with Microsoft™ Windows 2000/NT/XP installed will be
able to run the Galaxy Browser.
- Microsoft™ Internet Explorer 5.5 and up installed.
It is needed for some reports.
- Just about 100 MB free disk space for future program
caching.
- Internet Access is absolutely needed & High Speed
Internet Access is highly recommended – DSL, cable or better.
At this time we do not recommend “satellite connection” or dial-up; these two connections do work, however you may experience random interruptions
